Lightpoint receives CE Mark for LightPath Imaging System

Lightpoint Medical has received CE mark for its LightPath Imaging System for distribution in Europe.

The system is designed to help surgeons ensure they have removed all cancerous tissue in a single operation. It detects Cerenkov Luminescence, a faint light produced by PET imaging agents widely used in cancer diagnosis.

Surgeons currently rely on the look and feel of the tissue to detect cancer during surgery, which often results in some unremoved cancer tissue. Consequences include repeat operations, delayed follow-up treatment and increased likelihood of recurrence.

Lightpoint plans to launch the system in the U.S. in 2016. — Michael Cipriano
