AZ Opens Manufacturing and Packaging Facility in Russia

October 23, 2015

AstraZeneca last week opened a new state-of-the-art manufacturing and packaging facility in Kaluga, Russia.

Commercial production will begin in early 2016 and focus on finished drug manufacturing, packaging and quality control, AZ says. It will become fully operational in 2017 and produce more than 60 percent of AZ’s medicines marketed in Russia, focusing on therapies for cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders and respiratory conditions and infections, a spokesman said.

The facility is the company’s latest expansion of its global manufacturing capabilities, following a $200 million infusion into a Maryland biologics manufacturing facility, announced in November 2014, a $285 million investment in a Swedish manufacturing plant in May and the September purchase of a biologics plant in Colorado from Amgen. — Kellen Owings
