EMA Report: Recommendations for Drug Approvals Increased in 2015

May 25, 2016

Recommendations by the European Medicines Agency for drug approvals saw a steady uptick in 2015, even as the number of new active substances fell slightly.

According to an agency summary of 2015 actions, the EMA backed 93 new medicines for approval to the European Commission, an increase of 11 over 2014. However, most of these were me-too drugs because only 39 of those receiving EMA support were classified as new active substances, versus 41 recommended in 2014.

Cancer drugs saw a significant upswing in 2015 recommendations, with the EMA backing 14 for marketing authorization, nearly double the number in 2014, the report shows.
