AMR Report Aims to Give Drugmakers Cash Inducements

A new report out of the UK this week recommends monetary incentives to induce drugmakers to develop vaccines for drug-resistant infections.

A final report from the Review of Antimicrobial Resistance — an independent group commissioned by the British government and the Wellcome Trust — proposes paying between $800 million and $1.3 billion for successful vaccines that tackle antimicrobial resistant infections.

The groups say selected drugmakers should receive payment after the product comes to market instead of subsidizing the research and development directly, to avoid the appearance that the government would “pick a winner,” the report says.
