Pfizer Proposes Making Viagra Available Over-the-Counter in the UK
The U.K.’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency is taking public comments on a proposal to make Pfizer’s Viagra available over-the-counter. Pfizer applied for the change to make the 50 mg tablets available as a pharmacy medicine.
In weighing its decision, the MHRA will consider whether direct or indirect dangers exists to human health, even when used correctly, if used without medical supervision; whether there is frequently incorrect use; and whether further investigation of activity or side-effects is required.
An example of an indirect danger would include treating symptoms and masking an underlying condition requiring medical attention. Erectile dysfunction, for example, is a symptom of cardiovascular disease, and may also be caused by psychological factors or alcohol use, the MHRA said.
The MHRA is taking comments until April 18.
