Merck, Pfizer, & Corning Unveil New Pharmaceutical Glass at the White House

July 24, 2017

Merck, Pfizer and Corning have teamed up to produce a new pharmaceutical glass packaging that is more resistant to damage.

In a product demonstration and announcement at the White House on Thursday attended by President Trump, company representatives said they intend to build a new facility to manufacture the glass in the Southeast U.S.

Corning’s new product, Valor Glass, is more chemically durable and can withstand more force than traditional vials, the company said. In the demonstration, Trump attempted to break a Valor Glass vial using a metal lever, but was unable. According to the three companies, the material will allow for faster manufacturing throughput and require less compensation for breakage during the process. The pharmaceutical industry’s annual spending on glass for use in injectable drugs, vials and cartridges can reach billions of dollars.
