NICE Says Statins Should Be Offered to All CKD Patients

August 2, 2017

NICE called for statins to be provided to all chronic kidney disease patients in its new standard for treatment of CKD.

The standard lists Atorvastatin as the preferred statin because of its efficacy and cost-effectiveness. CKD currently kills about 60,000 individuals in England each year and about 2.6 million in the country suffer from the disease.

Professor Gillian Leng, NICE’s deputy chief executive, noted the condition puts patients at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and fatal heart attack, and said healthcare professionals should speak to patients about the treatment options.
