Price Steps Down as Health Secretary

October 3, 2017

Tom Price resigned as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, following a scandal over his use of taxpayer-funded private planes on official business trips.

In a statement Sept. 29, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Price had submitted his resignation to President Trump, who accepted it.

The flights reportedly cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, far in excess of what it would cost to fly commercial, as Price’s predecessors had done. Price sought to defuse the issue by agreeing to pay $52,000 for the cost of his seat on the flights.

Price, 62, a physician and former Georgia congressman, is succeeded by Don Wright as acting secretary, Sanders said. Wright is deputy assistant secretary and director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.
