PhRMA Highlights Cardiovascular Disease Treatments in Pipeline

February 23, 2018

Biopharmaceutical researchers are currently developing 200 medicines for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases like heart disease, stroke, heart failure and coronary artery disease, according to PhRMA.

Treatments in development include 42 for heart failure, 29 for pulmonary vascular diseases, and 25 for lipid disorders, 20 for peripheral vascular disease, 13 for thrombosis, and 14 for hypertension, PhRMA said in a report on medicines in development for heart disease and stroke.

Two breakthroughs, the use of anticoagulant warfarin to thin blood and reduce stroke risk and the use of cholesterol lowering statins that reduce “bad” cholesterol, show progress that “offers hope for continued advances to meet the remaining unmet need,” PhRMA said.
