Pew Finds State Oversight of Compounders Improved, But Some Lack Inspection Resources

More states have aligned their oversight of drug compounding with federal standards in the last two years even though some states dropped inspections, according to an analysis by the Pew Charitable Trusts.

State-level inspections of compounding pharmacies have dropped since 2015, when 26 states and the District of Columbia conducted routine inspections of all compounding facilities at least once a year. The number dropped to 22 states in 2017.

The Pew researchers found 32 states’ boards of pharmacy have rules requiring compounding pharmacies to comply with U.S. Pharmaceutical Convention quality standards, and an additional 11 have their own provisions that are at least as strong.
