Chicago Sues Opioid Distributors as McCaskill Accuses Teva of Stonewalling Investigation

March 9, 2018

Investigations and lawsuits against opioid manufacturers and distributors continued as Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) accused a drugmaker of blocking a Senate investigation and the city of Chicago sued three distributors.

McCaskill said Teva Pharmaceuticals refused to respond to her July 2017 request for information and documents relating to her committee investigation into the opioid addiction crisis. In October, after McCaskill formally wrote to Teva, accusing it of “obstructing basic oversight,” the company again declined to produce specific documents.

Meanwhile, the city of Chicago announced a lawsuit against three opioid distributors. The city alleged Cardinal Health, McKesson and AmerisourceBergen, which account for about 90 percent of all prescription drug distribution revenues in the U.S., contributed to the addiction epidemic by over-prescribing opioids and failing to report suspicious orders.
