Doctor Sentenced for Health Care Fraud

March 14, 2018

A Rhode Island doctor was sentenced to 51 months in prison for prescribing an addictive opioid spray in exchange for kickback fees from its manufacturer.

Jerrold Rosenberg plead guilty to conspiracy to receive kickbacks and health care fraud, having unnecessarily prescribed doses of Subsys, an addictive opioid spray containing fentanyl, to patients in exchange for $188,000 dollars in kickbacks from the drug’s manufacturer, Insys Therapeutics. The product is normally used by cancer patients.

Rosenberg subsequently lost his medical license and position as a professor at Brown University’s medical school, and was ordered to pay over $750,000 dollars to insurance companies.
