Abilify Lawsuits Set for First Trials in June

March 21, 2018

The first trial in multi-district litigation over claims the antipsychotic drug Abilify caused compulsive behavior must proceed in June, a federal judge has ruled.

Hundreds of lawsuits, the bulk of them filed in Florida, allege Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Abilify led to impulsive shopping, eating, gambling or sexual activity over the past eight years. FDA databases show nearly 500 reports of gambling disorder associated with Abilify from 2002 to the end of 2017.

BMS and Otsuka Pharmaceuticals, which developed the drug, moved for the lawsuits to be dismissed, arguing the plaintiffs had not presented scientifically valid evidence.
