Varian Announces 510(k) Clearance for Anchored Beacon Transponder

April 20, 2018

Varian received 510(k) clearance for its Calypso anchored beacon transponder device, which is used with the company’s medical lineal accelerators to detect tumor movement.

The device can be used with Varian’s TrueBeam, Edge and Clinac C-series accelerators to help clinicians deliver more precise stereotactic body radiotherapy.

The beacon transponders are implanted in small airways in or near the tumor area. They emit non-ionizing electromagnetic signals that are tracked in real-time and keep a treatment beam on the area.
