Doctor Gets Jail Sentence for Prescribing Unnecessary Compounded Drugs

June 11, 2018

A Biloxi, Mississippi, doctor was sentenced to 42 months in prison for participating in a compounding pharmacy fraud scheme, the Justice Department announced.

In a jury trial, Albert Diaz was convicted of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and wire fraud, conspiracy to distribute and dispense a controlled substance and falsification of records in a federal investigation.

Prosecutors said Diaz was part of a scheme to defraud TRICARE and other insurers through unnecessary compounded drug prescriptions between 2014 and 2015. The scheme earned more than $3 million in reimbursements.
