CMS Will Allow Medicare Beneficiaries to Use CGMs on Smartphones

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services modified its coverage policies for continuous glucose meters (CGMs) and will allow healthcare recipients to use the devices with their smartphones.

“After a thorough review of the law and our regulations, CMS is announcing that Medicare’s published coverage policy for CGMs will be modified to support the use of CGMs in conjunction with a smartphone, including the important data sharing function they provide for patients and their families,” the agency said.

The change will become effective “in the near future,” after the Durable Medical Equipment Medicare Administrative Contractors — private insurance companies contracted with Medicare to process durable medical equipment claims — issue a revised policy.
