MITA Urges Administration to Exempt Medical Imaging Devices From China Tariffs

July 10, 2018

The Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance called on the Trump Administration to exempt medical imaging products and parts from its newly imposed China tariffs.

“These tariffs on imaging products or their components will harm the American medical technology sector’s ability to stay competitive and will adversely affect the U.S. economy in ways that could compromise patient access to care,” said Patrick Hope, the group’s executive director.

In comments submitted to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, MITA noted that many products are imported from a Chinese manufacturer to a manufacturing facility in the U.S., where they are substantially transformed and re-exported, frequently back to China.

MITA said the administration’s tariffs could cost medical device manufacturers $138 million a year.
