Activists Call for Free Distribution of HIV Medication to Indicated Patients

July 30, 2018

The PrEP4All Collaboration, a group of grassroots activists, called for the U.S. government to distribute Truvada (emtricitabine/tenofovir) at no cost to patients with HIV.

Citing the success of the 1955’s national plan to distribute the polio vaccine, the group called for a similar distribution of the daily pill that helps prevent HIV infection.

The group urged the federal government to use its power to infringe on Gilead’s patent without permission, form contracts with generic manufacturers and distribute the medication, a tactic the group said would end the HIV epidemic.
