CDC Opioid Guidelines May Have Had Positive Impact on Prescribing Practices

September 17, 2018

A new analysis has found controversial CDC guidelines on prescribing opioid meds for chronic pain may have helped improve prescribing practices.

The report, published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, examined whether the guidelines (released two years ago by the CDC) “corresponded to declines in specific opioid prescribing practices,” and measured values like the overall prescribing rate, opioid dosage and overlapping benzodiazepine prescriptions.

“Several opioid prescribing practices were decreasing before the CDC guideline, but the time of its release was associated with a greater decline,” the study concluded.
