Governor Hopefuls Release Drug Pricing Plans

October 16, 2018

As the midterm elections approach, several gubernatorial candidates have released plans for how their administrations would limit drug price hikes and improve transparency.

Ben Jealous, the Democratic nominee challenging Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has proposed creating a state prescription drug affordability board to protect consumers against sudden, steep price hikes. “This will ensure that everyone, from those on Medicaid to folks [with] private insurance, can get a good deal and also further pave the way for Medicare for all,” he said.

Jealous also supports a drug spending cap for Medicaid, similar to that implemented by New York’s state legislature last year, which limits total payments to the sum of medical inflation plus five percent and targets manufacturers responsible for price increases that exceed the lid. He notes that the measure has preemptively saved New York $958 million.
