Trump Signs Bipartisan Opioid Package

November 1, 2018

President Trump signed a massive anti-opioid legislative package on Oct. 24 and gave an update on the administration’s efforts to deal with the opioid addiction crisis.

“Over the last year we have mobilized the entire federal government to address this crisis,” he said. “We have secured $6 billion dollars in new funding to combat opioids, the most money ever received in history.”

Trump called the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act an “historic action.” The package requires state Medicaid programs to establish drug-review and utilization requirements and drug management programs for patients at risk of opioid addiction, widening the availability of treatment for opioid abusers. It also requires states with a Medicaid state plan option to offer more than 16 beds in institutions for mental diseases “in certain circumstances,” the White House noted.
