Senate HELP Chairman Won’t Seek Reelection

December 21, 2018

Tennessee Republican Lamar Alexander, chairman of the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, says he won’t seek reelection in 2020.

Alexander has chaired the HELP committee since 2015 but is scheduled to give it up when the new Congress is sworn in next month.

Former governor of Tennessee, Alexander was first elected to the Senate in 2002. In his farewell statement on Monday, he took credit for anti-opioids legislation signed by President Trump in October and for writing the 21st Century Cures Act.
