RiteAid to Pay $300K for Over-Dispensing of Controlled Substances

January 8, 2019

RiteAid has agreed to pay $300,000 to settle claims its Rhode Island stores filled prescriptions greater than the 100 dosage units allowed by law.

Between September 2014 and February 2017, stores dispensed Schedule III controlled substances such as dronabinol (THC) and Fioricet (butalbital-acetaminophen-caffeine) in quantities of more than 100 dosage units in violation of the state’s Controlled Substance Act, according to an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the office of the Attorney General G Peter F. Kilmartin.

The DEA began its investigation after being told of a customer passing fraudulent prescriptions for controlled substances. Further investigation revealed a broader pattern of over-dispensing within the company.
