Ohio Governor Signs Law Allowing EpiPen Alternatives

January 18, 2019

Ohio’s Governor John Kasich signed into law a bill allowing pharmacists in the state to substitute lower cost alternatives to Mylan’s EpiPen.

Under the new law, pharmacists may substitute a less expensive but equivalent generic or brand-name alternative to the EpiPen with the consent of the prescribing doctor and the patient.

Mylan offers its own generic for EpiPen at half of the wholesale cost of the branded product. It also offers a savings card for the authorized generic for eligible patients, providing up to $25 off the patient’s out-of-pocket costs.
