FDA Warns About Plasma Infusion Treatments

February 25, 2019

The FDA issued an alert about establishments that falsely claim their plasma infusions can treat conditions like normal aging, heart disease and memory loss.

“The use of ‘young plasma’ or whole blood transfusions for unproven anti-aging or other purported effects is troubling,” said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb. “It’s based on no credible evidence.”

The agency cautioned that the infusion of plasma can occasionally cause serious allergic reactions or transfusion-related acute lung injury. In addition, individuals with preexisting heart disease can experience overload from infusions that cause breathing difficulties and swelling of the body.
