Vaccines Advisory Committee Endorses Three Strains for Flu Vaccines

March 12, 2019

An FDA advisory committee voted to recommend targeting three influenza strains in vaccines for use in the next flu season.

On the first day of a two-day meeting, the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee voted 14 to 0 to recommend two strains for the trivalent flu virus vaccine — which consists of three inactivated flu viruses — and a third strain for vaccines that protect again four strains of the virus.

The three strains are A/Brisbane/02/2018(H1N1)pdm09 and B/Colorado/06/2017 for the trivalent vaccine and B/Phuket/3073/2013 for quadrivalent vaccines. FDA presenters at the meeting noted that Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses are the most common nationwide.
