DOJ Files Suit to Stop Opioid Docs

May 22, 2019

Federal officials filed civil suit against two Texas doctors, alleging that they are shelling out dangerous levels of opioids without carefully screening their patients.

The lawsuit, filed in the Northern District of Texas, alleges that Cesar B. Penal-Rodriguez and Leovares A. Mendez issued “thousands of prescriptions without apparent regard for patient harm.”

Undercover federal drug officials visited the doctors who handed them prescriptions for $250 per visit. The doctors performed “only minimal or perfunctory medical evaluations,” and all but one of the 25 undercover agents obtained a prescription during the investigation, DOJ said.
