Florida Governor Signs Foreign Drug Importation Bill

June 18, 2019

Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill that would enable the state to source lower-cost prescription drugs from Canada and other countries — if the programs get the federal government’s blessing.

The state legislation calls for the creation of two programs — the Canadian Prescription Drug Importation Program and the International Prescription Drug Importation Program. But whether the state will be allowed to import cheaper drugs is up to the federal government. The governor’s office said it is currently working with the White House and HHS on an importation plan.

“Floridians don’t need more bureaucratic delays, they need Washington to follow suit and get this done,” DeSantis said.
