Michigan Physician Gets Five Year Sentence in Oxycodone Case

June 26, 2019

A Michigan doctor will spend the next five years in prison after a federal judge sentenced him over a scheme to distribute some 23,000 oxycodone pills.

Alex Kafi of West Bloomfield pleaded guilty last August to one count of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. Prosecutors said he betrayed “his duties as a licensed physician” and “accepted cash in exchange for writing medically unnecessary prescriptions.”

As part of his plea, Kafi admitted that he took cash for scrips, often without seeing or talking with patients, for nearly four years between 2013 and 2017. Kafi peddled the prescriptions through patient recruiters in exchange for $300 cash per prescription.
