Suboxone Maker Pays $1.4 Billion to Settle Fraud Investigation

July 19, 2019

Reckitt Benckiser (RB Group) has entered into the largest opioid settlement in U.S. history, agreeing to pay $1.4 billion to resolve an investigation into its marketing practices for Suboxone film.

The non-prosecution agreement settles claims that Indivior, an RB Group subsidiary at the time, participated in a plan to boost prescriptions of its controversial opioid withdrawal drug.

The former subsidiary – which still faces a criminal trial in May 2020 – is accused of painting the drug as less divertible than other buprenorphine products and using its “Here to Help” programs to connect patients with doctors it knew were illegally overprescribing the film.

Under the deal, the company will pay $700 million in civil settlements to federal and state governments, a $50 million settlement to the FTC, and repay earnings of $647 million.
