Buttigieg Drug Pricing Plan Targets ‘Worst Offender’ Drugmakers

October 17, 2019

Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg unveiled a drug pricing proposal that’s not just a cut-and-paste of the bill recently announced by his party colleagues in Congress.

Buttigieg’s plan would allow HHS to directly negotiate drug prices but would also impose harsh penalties on “worst offender pharmaceutical companies that continue to price egregiously.”

Along with tough financial penalties, Buttigieg’s proposal would take advantage of provisions of the Bayh-Doyle Act to “acquire” companies’ intellectual property when price negotiations fail, or in cases of natural disaster, or public emergency.
