Physician Pays $1.4 Million to Settle Opioid Pill Mill Charges

November 14, 2019

A Pennsylvania doctor agreed to pay $1.4 million to resolve allegations of writing improper prescriptions for controlled substances including opioids.

The physician, Spiro Y. Kassis, was also accused of stealing the proceeds from the sale of the prescriptions and depositing them into various bank accounts. In addition to the $1.4 million payment, Kassis agreed to a 15-year exclusion from Medicare and Medicaid.

Kassis previously pled guilty to 14 counts of illegal distribution of controlled substances in a related criminal case. He is expected to be sentenced in January 2020.
