Device Sterilizer to End Use of Ethylene Oxide at Michigan Plant

December 8, 2019

Viant Medical and Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) have agreed to a consent order that ends the company’s use of ethylene oxide sterilization at its Grand Rapids plant.

The consent order resolves several violations the sterilization firm received related to its management of the facility’s ethylene oxide emissions. The chemical compound is a known human carcinogen.

Under the order, the devicemaker’s Grand Rapids facility will cease sterilizing medical equipment with ethylene oxide by the end of the year and conduct monthly air sampling through February. It will also pay a fine of $110,000 to the state.
