FDA Approves Abbott’s Heart Pump in Surgical Procedure

The FDA has approved the use of Abbott’s HeartMate 3 heart pump in a surgical technique that gives patients with more advanced heart failure an alternative to open heart surgery.

The new approach offers surgeons an alternative surgical method for implanting patients with the left ventricular assist device.

The less-invasive technique, which involves implantation via an incision between a patient’s ribs, can lead to shorter time in the hospital and a faster recovery.
