Trump Urges Congress to Deliver Bipartisan Drug Pricing Legislation

February 11, 2020

In his State of the Union address, President Trump called on Congress to pass legislation to curb the nation’s high drug prices, saying he would sign a bipartisan bill into law if it reached the Oval Office. He did not mention insulin pricing as expected.

“I’m calling for bipartisan legislation that achieves the goal of dramatically lowering prescription drug prices,” he said. “Get a bill on my desk and I will sign it into law immediately.”

Trump mentioned talks with Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and others in Congress to find a compromise on a drug pricing bill “quickly and properly.”

The White House supports a bipartisan bill, S. 2543, sponsored by Grassley and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), that would impose fines on pharma companies that hike Medicaid drug prices high above the inflation rate.
