Coronavirus Outbreak Threatens Supply Chain, Says Former FDA Commissioner

Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb warned a Senate committee of the potential for “unprecedented supply chain disruptions” as the COVID-19 outbreak threatens China’s production of components.

Many “low-technology starting materials and components” have become solely sourced from China and most are produced in the Hubei province, the center of the outbreak, Gottlieb told the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

Medical devices operate under a different regulatory framework than drugs, and it may be harder to identify and mitigate potential shortages, he said.
