MHRA Warns That Olympus Duodenoscopes May Have Frayed Wires

February 27, 2020

Various models of Olympus Medical’s duodenoscopes may have unraveled wires that could cut users and patients, the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said in a medical device alert.

Olympus announced that two of its duodenovideoscope and two of its duodenofiberscope models may have frayed elevator wires and should be inspected before being used. Users that find their devices are affected should set them aside and contact the company to arrange repairs.

Two other models that share the defect have led to a total of 12 adverse effects, the company said, including finger injuries for six hospital staff members.
