European Commission to Fund Diagnostics Research to Tackle COVID-19

March 16, 2020

The European Commission announced a $258 million aid package to boost global preparedness, prevention and containment of COVID-19, including $111 million for research related to diagnostics, therapeutics and prevention.

The rate of new cases of COVID-19 has dropped off in China’s Wuhan region and Europe is now considered the center of the outbreak.

“As cases continue to rise, public health is the number one priority,” said the commission’s President Ursula von der Leyen. “Whether it be boosting preparedness in Europe, in China or elsewhere, the international community must work together. Europe is here to play a leading role.”
