WHO Issues Warning about Coronavirus Antibody Tests

April 21, 2020

The World Health Organization (WHO) has cautioned against relying on serological tests in the fight against COVID-19 because they are not reliable for gauging immunity.

The international agency noted that the tests can only measure a patient’s level of COVID-19 antibodies and that they don’t prove that former COVID-19 patients are resistant to the coronavirus.

“Right now, we have no evidence that the use of a serologic test can show that an individual is immune or protected from reinfection,” said Maria van Kerkhove, WHO’s COVID-19 technical lead.
