Smiths Medical Absorbs Access Scientific, Gains Powerwand Catheters

Smiths Medical has expanded its catheter portfolio with the acquisition of San Diego, Calif.-based Access Scientific.

Smiths gains the rights to the company’s Powerwand midline and extended dwell catheters, which are designed to prevent infections and to allow for ultrasound visualization when in the patient’s vein.

Results from recent clinical studies showed no bloodstream infections linked to the Powerwand products over a total of 35,000 catheter days, Smiths said.
