Texas Study Finds Blood-Based Treatment Safe for Severe COVID-19 Patients

A Texas study of convalescent plasma as a treatment for critically ill COVID-19 patients found the blood-based treatment to be safe for severely infected patients.

The trial at Houston Methodist hospitals evaluated the treatment in 25 patients with severe or life-threatening infections between March 28 and April 14.

In addition to safety,  the study also assessed the participants’ clinical status 14 days post-transfusion. Of the 25 patients, nine had improved within seven days of transfusion, and an additional 12 patients improved 14 days after treatment.
