NIH Study to Examine Drugs Currently Used to Treat Children With COVID-19

June 11, 2020

Researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are evaluating drugs doctors are using to treat COVID-19 in infants, children and adolescents.

The study, which is not a clinical trial with a control group, is designed to refine dosing of existing drugs and to improve safety; it doesn't aim to evaluate which drug is the best treatment.

The researchers plan to collect information on potential side effects and patient outcomes, such as the duration and type of respiratory support that may be needed and the average length of hospital stay, said the NIH.

The study is being conducted at approximately 40 sites of the Pediatric Trials Network, which is funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). — Suz Redfearn
