House Coronavirus Subcommittee Asks GAO to Audit Operation Warp Speed

July 28, 2020

The House coronavirus subcommittee has asked the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to begin a review of the Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed initiative.

In a bipartisan letter to the GAO’s Comptroller General, Gene Dodaro, the House Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis asked the congressional watchdog to provide monthly briefings beginning next month and trimonthly written reports starting in September.

They also called on GAO to look into Operation Warp Speed’s organizational structure and decision-making methods, its funding criteria and justifications, how it selects vaccine and treatment candidates, and its progress toward delivering 300 million doses of a working vaccine by January 2021.

“GAO has the potential to augment the scientific and project management expertise of the staff at Operation Warp Speed, serve as a nonpartisan interface to congressional oversight, enhance the organization and management of the projects, and reduce the risk of delays and other setbacks in this endeavor,” the lawmakers said.
