AstraZeneca to Supply Up to 400 Million COVID-19 Vaccine Doses to EU

August 17, 2020

The European Commission reached its first COVID-19 vaccine supply deal Friday, securing up to 400 million doses of AstraZeneca’s AZD1222.

Under the agreement, the commission will purchase 300 million doses of the vaccine on behalf of European Union member states, with an option to purchase 100 million more. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The commission is also negotiating with Johnson & Johnson and Sanofi-GlaxoSmithKline for similar vaccine supply deals. The EU is expected to enter into an advanced purchase agreement with J&J for 200 million doses of its vaccine, with an option to buy 200 million more (DID, Aug. 14).

The commission said it concluded talks with Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline last month for 300 million doses of their COVID-19 vaccine (DID, Aug. 3). An agreement has yet to be finalized.

AstraZenenca signed a separate agreement last week with Spain-based mAbxience to produce AZ’s COVID-19 vaccine for most of Latin America at facilities in Mexico and Argentina (DID, Aug. 14). — Jordan Williams
