Smiths Medical Pulls Infusion Pumps, Citing Software Error

Smiths Medical has recalled certain Medfusion 3500 and 4500 syringe-pump models over a software error that can cause the incorrect amount of medication to be delivered in certain circumstances.

The company said the software error can cause over-delivery or under-delivery of medication when an operator interrupts and then resumes a dose instead of beginning a new infusion.

The company said it expects to release software updates late next year that will fix the problem.
