Medtronic Receives FDA Approval for Child-Friendly Insulin Pump

Medtronic’s MiniMed 770G insulin pump system has been given premarket approval by the FDA, allowing its use in type 1 diabetes patients as young as two years old.

The hybrid closed-loop therapy is smartphone compatible, allowing the remote viewing of data on smartphones and featuring app notifications that are sent when a patient’s sugar levels go out of range.

The insulin pump is also able to share data automatically with clinicians to facilitate effective telehealth visits. The device uses an algorithm that continually adjusts the amount of insulin delivered every five minutes depending on a patient’s needs.
