Serum Institute to Manufacture 200 Million COVID-19 Vaccine Doses for Low-Income Countries

September 30, 2020

The Serum Institute of India is expanding its existing partnership with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and will now manufacture up to 200 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines for low- and middle-income countries.

The institute has agreed to manufacture an additional 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine candidates from AstraZeneca and Novavax, expanding on its agreement in August to manufacture 100 million doses. The contract includes an option to provide additional doses as needed.

The Gates Foundation has agreed to provide a further $150 million for the initiative, bringing the foundation’s total funding to $300 million.
