Australia Asks for Comments on Planned UDI System

Australia’s Therapeutics Goods Agency has published a new consultation paper on its plan to establish a unique device identification (UDI) system and is asking for feedback from device sponsors.

The Australian government has recently allocated funding of $5.5 million to help set up the new system by 2024, requiring sponsors to ensure their devices carry UDIs and that the details are entered into an Australian UDI database (AusUDID).

When the new system is up and running, sponsors that import or supply devices in Australia would need to verify that device manufacturers have assigned a UDI to their device and have placed it on the device, on labeling and on packaging, the agency said.
