UK to Launch New Medical Device Information System

November 12, 2020

The UK will put in place a new Medical Device Information System (MDIS) in January that is intended to improve device monitoring and performance and link them with patient outcomes.

National Health Service (NHS) Digital is establishing the information system to collect device data from all NHS and private provider organizations, starting with mesh-related procedures, said Nadine Dorries, the UK’s Minister of State at the Department of Health and Social Care.

Currently in the pilot stage, the MDIS will eventually be used to support surveillance of all medical devices and will enable patients to be contacted when safety concerns are identified, Dorries said.
