Amazon Announces ‘Amazon Pharmacy’ for Prescription Drugs

November 18, 2020

Amazon has launched an online prescription drug service, Amazon Pharmacy, that enables customers to order home delivery of prescriptions using their mobile devices.

The giant Seattle-based online retailer said Amazon Pharmacy will ship insulin, asthma inhalers and other common generic or branded medications. But it will not ship opioids or other restricted medications because of the theft risk. Customers will need a prescription from their physicians, and Amazon said it will accept most insurance plans.

The new service follows Amazon’s 2018 purchase of online prescription delivery start-up PillPack for $700 million.
